Instagram has hit a big milestone: 500 million registered users. The Facebook-owned image sharing company shared the news on its blog earlier today, alongside some other equally impressive stats.
Recent news that Instagram’s likes and comments had dropped by 33% in the past year was met with much jeering, but if you read the article, you know that this slump is actually seen as a consequence of growth. As the network’s user base grows, there’s simply more competition for users’ eyes (and thumbs).
And if there was any doubt that this is the case, Instagram’s new milestone should put it to rest. According to the announcement, they’ve hit 500 million registered users and, more importantly, 300 million of those use the app every single day. Those are some serious numbers, but the credit for this feat, says Instagram, belongs to the users:
Thank you for your creativity, your openness and your passion for sharing your worlds with one another. We can’t wait to see what you create next.
All in all, Instagram has maintained the same grown rate over the past year and a half: growing by 200M in the past 18 months and 100M in the last nine. To paraphrase Mark Twain, it seems “the reports of [Instagram’s] death are greatly exaggerated.”
