The Palette Cube is Like a Portable Eyedropper Tool for the Real World

cubeheader

Cube is a small new device from the Australian company Palette. Easily sample colors around you using the portable color digitizer and sample them later on your PC or Mac. While the Cube’s central abilities focus on identifying the beautiful colors that surround us every day, it can also be used for color matching and achieving picture-perfect white balance in photos.

Weighing only 1.76 ounces, Cube can easily be carried around in your photo bag. Just take it out, place it on a surface, and tap the top of the unit to sample the current color. Results can be transferred to your iOS or Android smartphone for instant viewing or imported into Adobe Photoshop. Cube can report its findings back in a number of different color systems including RGB, HEX, CMYK, LAB, and LRV.

The Cube itself is designed from high impact PC/ABS plastic and uses what Palette is calling a ‘unique integrating sphere’ to capture colors from any surface. When you push the button on top of the unit, Cube sends out flashes of red, green, and blue light to detect any given surface color instantly. The unit itself can store up to twenty different scanned colors at once, so no need to rush to your PC once you have measured a couple of values.

Palette notes that most surfaces can be read, including plastic, wood, paper, cardboard, concrete, paint, fabric, powders, and organic items. The company does not recommend scanning the following objects, as they may return inaccurate results: transparent objects, liquids, loose fabrics, metallic surfaces, and fluorescent surfaces.

If obtaining spot readings of colors in the real world is something you’re interested in doing, then you may want to take a peek at Palette’s latest creation. The Palette Cube can currently be ordered from the company’s website for $180.
