It’s here! A couple of weeks after teasing us with the release, TIME has unveiled their online portal where you can count down and learn all about the Top 100 most influential images of all time—pure photo geek nirvana.
If you’re thinking this is just another list, you’ll be pleasantly surprised. This project is equal parts visual inspiration and photography history lesson, complete with 20 short documentaries and many never-before-told stories behind some of these iconic images.
“There is no formula that makes a picture influential,” explains TIME on the project’s About page. “Some images are on our list because they were the first of their kind, others because they shaped the way we think. And some made the cut because they directly changed the way we live. What all 100 share is that they are turning points in our human experience.”
Images like The Falling Soldier, Muhammad Ali standing over a knocked out Sonny Liston, Tank Man, and VJ Day bring deep historical significance to the list, but it’s not just about the oft-seen “iconic” shots—famous celebrity portraits, the first cell phone picture, and incredible scientific imagery made the list as well.
This list is the product of thousands of interviews with photographers and photo subjects, “an exhaustive process that unearthed some incredible stories that we are proud to tell for the first time, in both written stories and original documentary videos.”
We can think of no better way to spend your weekend (or blow of work for the rest of Friday…) than by hunkering down and reading story after story after story about the most impactful photos of all time. And if you enjoy what you read, keep in mind that TIME is selling a companion book and several prints and posters.
