Blockai, the company that burst onto the scene a few months ago by offering a totally novel way to protect your photo copyrights, is expanding onto Instagram. Now, all it takes to claim copyrights on your Instagram photos is a hashtag.
In case you don’t remember, Blockai was making headlines back in July because of how they help you claim your copyrights: they use the Bitcoin Blockchain. The blockchain is the public database used to verify the world’s bitcoin transactions, and when you register your photos with Blockai, the company creates a permanent record in the blockchain and provides you with a “certificate” to prove it.
It also helps you track where your photo is being used online, in case your blood pressure isn’t high enough…
Using Blockai is already very simple, but the service broke new ground yesterday when they debuted Instagram integration. Now, all you have to do is link your Instagram account to your Blockai account, and any new photos posted to IG can be automatically registered on the blockchain by simply adding the hashtag #blockai.
When you add that hashtag, a permanent record is created in the bitcoin blockchain and Blockai posts a comment on your picture with the certificate link.
PetaPixel friend Benjamin Von Wong has been using the service for a few weeks now, and a close inspection of his latest Instagram uploads will reveal both #blockai hashtags and the certificate links.
As we mentioned in our original coverage of Blockai, this is not meant to be a replacement for registering your copyrights with the Copyright Office. We still definitely suggest serious photographers invest the time and money to properly register their copyrights.
That said, we can’t think of a single reason why you wouldn’t use this new service from Blockai. Another way to claim ownership over your photographs, and all it takes is a hashtag—what is there not to love?
