Here’s a friendly piece of advice: if you bet on sports, never post a photo of your winning ticket online. That’s what an Australian woman found out the hard way yesterday. After sharing a photo of herself with her winning ticket on Facebook, a stranger used the photo to claim her $825 prize.
Triple M reports that Perth, Australia woman named Chantelle attended the prestigious Melbourne Cup horse race yesterday and placed a 100-to-1 bet on Prince Of Penzance. When that horse won the race, Chantelle’s ticket was worth $825.
To celebrate, Chantelle posted a selfie of herself with her ticket on Facebook:
What she didn’t realize was that the barcode in the photo can be used at an automated machine to claim the winnings, and that’s exactly what some stranger did after seeing the photo.
“To the low life who is obviously my friend on Facebook and used my photo to claim our winnings. You’re a massive dick. You ruined my day,” Chantelle wrote in a follow-up post on Facebook. She tells Triple M that police were able to track down where the money was claimed and believe that they will be able to track down the unscrupulous (but clever) thief.
