Olympus today unveiled a new camera — one that’s unlike any of the company’s modern digital cameras. The 2.4-megapixel camera is found in the new Olympus EyeTrek Insight EI-10 smart glasses.
Designed for “business applications,” the EI-10 glasses allows users to see the built-in display without blocking vision. The concept is the same as the functionality of Google’s Glass camera glasses, which were introduced in 2013 before being discontinued in 2015 (and then released for enterprise purposes this year).
Unlike the Google Glass, which comes with the camera and display attached to a pair of glasses, the Olympus EI-10 features an attachment mechanism that allows the system to be easily mounted to any pair of prescription or safety glasses.
The Android-powered EI-10 can shoot photos and videos with 1992×1216 effective pixels as well as playback images on the 640×400 OLED display.
In addition to the camera features, the EI-10 can have custom applications installed to broaden its use cases.
“Olympus is currently partnering with product and software developers to further enhance users’ experiences with the El-10,” Olympus says.
Other features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a number of 3-axis sensors (accelerometer, gyro, and magnetic field), 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, a 16-bit monaural microphone, a Micro-B USB port, a compact and lightweight (66g/2.33oz with battery) design, and a long battery life (30-60 min).
The Olympus EI-10 will be available in November 2017 with a price tag of $1,500.
