Panoramic Morocco: Shooting Travel Photos with the Hasselblad Xpan

A quick trip to Morocco turned into another example of why panoramic travel photography is special. Using his Hasselblad Xpan for most of the shots, and cropping a few Canon shots for the rest, photographer Tom Kluyver created a mesmerizing short tour through Morocco and the Sahara desert.

“The trip through Morocco was a short trip. With a quick tour, and very long drive, from Marrakech to the Sahara and back,” Kluyver tells PetaPixel. “I prefer to use my Hasselblad Xpan, because of the combination of mood captured with film and its unique cinematic ratio. However, for this trip, I sometimes preferred to use my Canon. The hard sun often made it difficult to make quick correct exposures with film unfortunately.”

The trip started in Marrakech, where Kluyver took in the beautiful scenery and gorgeous architecture:

Then Kluyver took a long drive through the Atlas mountains towards the Sahara desert. Seeing the Sahara for the first time, he told us, is an experience he won’t ever forget.

“At first it looked like a Fata Morgana (a mirage), because it appears out of nothing. Gigantic hills of sand stretching on forever. Its one of the most mesmerizing things I have seen,” says Kluyver. “Once our camels were prepared we rode on camels into the desert to see the sunset and find a camp to stay the night at. A not so long, but very painful, ride into the desert was rewarded with a traditional dinner and a clear night full of stars.”
