Plotagraph Pro is really neat. The program lets you ‘animate’ cinemagraph style GIFs and videos from single JPEGs. There’s just one problem: the price. If the $300 asking price is too rich for your blood, we found a “pay-what-you-want” Photoshop action that does a great job mimicking the more expensive software!
The Plotagraph-mimicking action was created by photographer Diako Mardanbegi, who is all-but-giving it away on a “pay-what-you-want” basis at this link. Using the action—which, we should note, has only been tested on Photoshop CC 2015.5—generates similar results to Plotagraph Pro in just a few easy steps.

Creating these images is an 11-step process reprinted (with permission) below:
- Download the Action set and load it into Photoshop.
- Enable ‘Button Mode’ in the action panel to make it easier to interact with the actions. And remember to change the Photoshop workspace to ‘motion’.
- Locate the Plotagraph actions (colored with yellow).
- Open your photo in Photoshop.
- Click the first action named “Step 1: Prepare image”
- Then press the second action named “Step 2,3: Add region”
- The action stops here and gets red. It is ready for you to define a region you want to add motion to. Use the selection tools and select a region.
- Press the action “Step 2,3: Add region” again, you will see that the selection edges disappear and the action gets red again. At this point you need to use transform tools (from the edit menu) and make a transformation. Start with a basic translation if its your first time. You will see that the previously selected region move on top of the background as you translate it. DO NOT mess with other tools and don’t do anything else except applying a transformation.
- Click on the action “Step 2,3: Add region” again. It’s color should get yellow meaning that you are done with this region.
- Follow the numbers 5-9 if you need to add motion to other regions and add as many region as you want.
- Press the action “Step 4: Animate” and it creates the Plotagraph for you which you can then save as GIF or render as a video.
While he’ll be the first to tell you that the results are not on the same level as the more expensive software—he goes so far as encouraging you to get the actual thing—Mardanbegi’s action is an affordable alternative that we think does a pretty amazing job.
