Apple Stores to Offer Free 1-Hour Photo Workshops

Guess who’s getting into the world of photography workshops? Apple.

That’s right: the company wants people to be more adept at shooting photos with their iPhones and editing photos on their Macs, so it’s now launching free 1-hour workshops on those subjects (and more) in its sleek Apple Stores.

The workshops will debut next month and are part of a new campaign titled “Start Something New,” which puts the spotlight on the creative and amazing things that artists are making with the help of their Apple products.

In the workshop lineup are 3 different ones that are relevant to photographers: iPhone Photography, iPhone Videography, and Perfect Photos on Mac.

“We’ll teach you how to shoot photos more creatively and help you try out various accessories and techniques—like long exposure for light trails, using Time-lapse to show progression, or getting up close with nature using a macro lens,” Apple says. “Then, we ‘ll explore artistic ways to adjust and edit your photos, so you can create a work of art, find your style, or just improve your skills.”

The workshops will be available at every single Apple Store around the world, so starting in January 2016, check your local store’s website for its workshop schedule if you’re interested in attending one.

Struggles Only Photographers Will Understand

Here’s a humorous video by DigitalRev that pokes fun at some common struggles that photographers go through in their lives and in their minds. Sometimes it’s not easy being obsessed with photography.

Here are some of the struggles that are mentioned:

1. Office slave: Being stuck indoors when you could be out shooting.
2. Too much gear, too little money: Wanting new gear, but realizing you could take an international trip for the price.
3. Choices: Even if you have the money, choices can be overwhelming.
4. Inspired, then depressed: “I will never be that good… why am I taking photos?”
5. The best camera is the one you left at home
6. Can’t stop judging: Being critical of every photo you see
7. More about cameras than traveling

Do This 52 Week Photography Challenge to Improve Your Skills in 2016

If you’re looking to get better at photography in 2016, one great option is to do a 52-week photography challenge that forces you to complete regular assignments throughout the whole year. And we’ve found a great one you can take on as your new year’s resolution.

Photographer Dale Foshe has put together a 52 week photography challenge list that anyone around the world can download and take part in.

“I have been a full time wedding photographer for 7 years, and have been teaching photography at the local community arts center for several years now,” Foshe tells PetaPixel. “Part of what I have seen that helps my student’s grow the fastest is a repeating weekly assignment around three categories.”

The 3 categories are: portrait, landscape, and artistic impression (expressing yourself in your own creative way). With these categories in mind, Foshe created this 52-week list of assignments (click download below to save and print the PDF for yourself, or visit/bookmark the online list here):

In the first week, you’ll be challenged to shoot a self portrait. The following week, capture a traditional landscape. After another week passes, make a photo with the simple theme “red.” And on and on it goes. Over 52 weeks, you’ll alternate between shooting portraits, landscapes, and artistic assignments.

“This list is going to be more challenging to complete than a simple 52 week photography challenge list,” Foshe writes on the challenge webpage. “But stick with it to the end and I guarantee you will be a better photographer for it.”

He also recommends that you band together with a group of photographers to shoot and share the images together. If you’d like to join a large digital group, there’s an official challenge group on Facebook with hundreds of members already.

Film Was the Best-Selling Photo Product on Amazon this Holiday Season

Amazon had another record-breaking holiday season this year, with huge gains in product sales, Prime membership subscriptions, and digital streaming. You may, however, be surprised to hear what came out on top on the list of best-selling photography products over the holidays.

It was film.

That’s right. Film. Amazon announced this week that the #1 selling item in its Camera category was Fujifilm’s Instax Mini Instant Film Twin Pack – White, which contains 20 sheets of Instax instant film for about $15.

Coming in second and third place were the GoPro HERO4 Silver action camera and an AmazonBasics head strap mount for GoPro cameras.

With the film industry struggling to stay relevant over the past couple of decades after the rise of digital photography, it’s neat to see things picking up… at least in certain niches. In addition to the likes of Fuji, Impossible, and Lomography sparking a resurgence in the popularity of instant photography, Hollywood is also helping to breathe new life into traditional photographic films as well — the latest Star Wars movie was shot on Kodak film, and Kodak recently said that its film business may finally be profitable again in 2016.
